First, please consider removing any surface patina to provide a clean canvas.
Although it is probably not necessary, you might consider taking a water-wet tooth brush and VERY CAREFULLY brushing all the surfaces.
The PowerMAX! models are FULL of little prototype details; so brush don't scrub. The model's material is cast brass, so it will be robust.
After a wet brushing, let it air dry. Prep the brass body with a short soak in white vinegar, then wash clear and let dry. Then prime the brass model with Floquil Metal Primer and let it dry for at least 24 hours, preferable for two days. If possible, we suggest to bake the model in an oven for an hour or so. Then top-coat with Floquil, and do not handle for at least 24 hours.
Once dry, prepare a very thin coat of primer. The primer is going to fill some details out if you use too much! Then dry brush the primer onto all of the surfaces (alternatively, use an air brush). Let the primer dry, then;
1. Select base metal and wood color. DO NOT THIN THEM. 2. Paint all metal surfaces in the base metal, and paint all the wood surfaces in the base wood. Use a photo of the prototype for direction. 3. Mix the remaining base metal and wood colors together, use a very fine brush, dry brush the mix onto the undersides of every detail, and any place they intersect with other details and you will see shadows and shades forming. 4. Let dry and spray or dry brush with a light coat of flat clear lacquer (dull coat) 5. If you really want to get fancy, use Bare Metal Foil and rub it on the metal parts with a small embossing tool and they will sparkle.
You may still get some wear through or chipping on edges, so handle carefully after painting is complete.
Please send us photos of your finished work, and we will mount them on our "Modelers Gallery" page.
