Interurbans, and their suburban counterparts (the streetcar), were once common throughout the country. They served both large cities and rural communities. The Pacific Electric Railway is regarded as the greatest of all interurbans. But, only one still operates today, the Iowa Traction Railway (others have shed their "interurban passenger or combine" status and now operate as short line freight carriers). The commuter services inteurbans have recently morphed into LRT (light rail transit) systems as cities look for alternatives to increasingly crowded highways. Many cities still operate traction passenger or trolley services as tourist attractions, as well as revenue cars.
